An Undertaking of S.D.College (Lahore) Ambala Cantt

On the occasion of Constitution Day, dept of Sanskrit & SDHDR&T Centre organized a discussion session on the topic – SANSKRIT SHASTRIYA CULTURE & INDIAN CONSTITUTION, संस्कृत –शास्त्रीय संस्कृहत एवम् भारतीय संहवधान” in which Sanskrit students shared their information and understanding about the constitution including. A power point presentation was made by the Sanskrit department on different aspects of constitution. Following issues were discussed – On the one hand India is defined by Constitution which has collected all good values including justice, equality, fraternity, freedom etc from different western countries who fought inhuman two world wars & none from our own country & its tradition which had 7world renowned universities in past, secondly it is defined by Market economy which based on aggressive competition for profit and thirdly it is defined by religions (not Dharma) which have one book, one God, one messenger. Among these three factors people are trying to live a democratic meaningful life of wellbeing. It was also noted that Britisher don’t have a written constitution because their constitution will not be in accordance with commandments and discipline of the Abrahamic beliefs. A written constitution of the British will disturb all systems of Britain including the position of Queen, compassion of Christianity and trade practices. It was also noted that the constituent assembly was very apologetic in their discussion as they limited themselves to political independence and economic freedom in such a manner that doesn’t offend Britishers (Pl read presidential address). It is because of this we need to provide a cultural base to the constitution so that people become qualified enough not to misinterpret constitutional spirit. Though paintings from Indian culture were added in to make it look more Indian. It was felt that India being an agrarian society needed unconditional right to Purushartah values instead of industry & trade values. Lastly it was also noted that wrong translations of the Sanskrit terms in English language distorted the Indian ethos, like King as Raja, Religion as Dharma, Women as Stri , Freedom as Swatantrata etc. These mistranslations need to be checked and given a correct Indian context.
