An Undertaking of S.D.College (Lahore) Ambala Cantt

(Under VedaVyaas Restructuring Sanskrit Scheme) Dept of Sanskrit & SDHDR&T Center of S. D. College, Ambala Cantt made a presentation on the topic – *“ग -वृषभ संस्कृहत – दशथन के हवहवध आयाम ं की मीमांसा” “Critique of Different Dimensions of Go-Vrishabh (Cow-Bull) Cultural Philosophy to understand & explore the Indian cultural, religious & familial response to Cow & Bull. It’s interesting to note that in cow all deities reside and without cow’s milk, clarified butter etc a yagya can’t be performed. Moreover Bull is manifestation of Dharma itself with four Yugas- Satyuga, Dwaapar, Tretaa & Kaliyuga whereas whenever sin increases or some bad elements like Asura, Rakshas etc terrorize people on earth then earth in the form of cow goes to Vishnu to seek help and Vishnu always assures her of help and then by incarnation he unburdens cow- earth of sins to begin afresh. Interestingly cow is more close to lord Vishnu; particularly to the incarnation form of Krishna whereas Bull is associated with lord Shiva. Then there is Vedic cow Kaam Dhenu who can provide all desired things by anyone and this Kaam Dhenu cow emerges from churning of milk-Ocean. In Indian agrarian culture which includes economy, mythology, religious rituals & philosophy, cow & bull hold a very special and respectable place. Prof. (Dr.) Ramakant Angiras, former professor of Kaalidaas Chair, department Sanskrit responded to these observations with his scholarly insights right from Vedic times to present day times. It was interesting to see the flavor of Vedic response along with Pauranic responses & Vaishnav & Shaivite culture. Cow & Bull are the constituents of Indian consciousness & cultural ethos. For a constipated dumb mind it may be difficult to understand, respond & appreciate Indian sensibility about the cow & bull because for him or her they will remain animals. Cow is Vaak (speech element) too which was expounded by the speaker in a scholarly manner.
